A group of major technology companies, including Meta (Facebook’s parent company), Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and TikTok, have signed an accord to combat AI-generated deepfakes that aim to deceive voters in democratic elections. The accord is voluntary and does not involve a commitment to ban or remove deepfakes. Instead, it outlines methods that the companies will use to detect and label deceptive AI content when it is created or distributed on their platforms. The companies will also share best practices with each other and respond swiftly when deceptive content starts to spread. The agreement comes as more than 50 countries are set to hold national elections in 2024.
